DEAD bodies of vultures allegedly discovered at Eke-Ihe Market in Awgu local government area of Enugu state has raised concerns among the residents and authorities in the state.
A story that followed the video alleged that the vultures died after a meal of cows.
The police authority however debunked the allegation saying the dead vultures were handiwork of poachers. In a statement by the state police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu said that the police wishes to inform members of the public that there was no cause for alarm as enquiry conducted by the command revealed that it is the activity of bird hunters(poachers). Amaraizu said the poachers usually mix some concoction with slaughtered animal left overs and faeces with a view to attracting vultures to it and to consume it. “Further information gathered revealed that after consuming it, vultures will be weak and subsequently die for them to go and pick it.
“However, some vultures believed to have taken the concoction of these bird hunters(poachers) fell down in Enugu community market and were not able to be picked on time before the widespread speculations . “The command however wishes to make it clear that it is not emanating from any slaughtered animal for human consumption but rather the activities of mischief makers who want to provoke and cause mayhem in the state . “The commissioner of police enjoins all to be law abiding and go about their normal lawful businesses,” Amaraizu said. Close sources at The community however said they were still investigating if the vultures actually died out of a particular cow allegedly slaughtered in the community and sold at the Eke-Ihe Market.

The Federal Government has described as fake and sinister the report that the outbreak of monkeypox in some parts of the country resulted from the alleged free medical care by the government in the affected areas.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said Nigerians should disregard the report which, apparently, is being spread by some unscrupulous persons to fit into a sinister agenda.
The statement was signed by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Segun Adeyemi.
”The Federal Government has not conducted any free medical service or care in either Bayelsa or Rivers state, as alleged in the fake report being circulated.
“So, that could not have been the cause of the outbreak of Monkey Pox in both states.
“Monkey Pox is a virus found only in monkeys and it is rare in human beings. It belongs to the same family as Chicken Pox and Smallpox.
”It is suspected that someone may have contacted it by eating monkey meat, thus triggering the current outbreak,” the Minister said.
He assured that no effort would be spared in curtailing the spread of the disease.

The Federal Government says the outbreak of “Type C’ form of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in some parts of the country has nothing to do with moral or spiritual lifestyles of Nigerians as being speculated in some quarters.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire said this to State House correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara was on Tuesday quoted as saying that the outbreak of meningitis ‘C’ occurred because of fornication and other sins being committed by Nigerians.
However, Ehanire said that the outbreak of the virus had nothing to do with the lifestyles of Nigerians.
According to him, nature only played “a fast one’’ in the affected states.
“The federal government does not have views of that nature and I am not sure the state government can really continue to make that statement. When things happen, yes you can begin to look this way and that way for the cause of it.
“But like I said nature played us an unfortunate stroke but that is not to say we committed sin or anything.”
“It does happen that things occur out of the blues,’’ he said.
The minister noted that there had been a very robust response from his ministry and the affected state governments along with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Nigeria Primary Health Care Development Agencies, World Health Organisation, UNICEF and other partners.
He, therefore, allayed the fears of Nigerians about the ministry’s response to the outbreak of the virus, adding that already 500,000 doses of vaccines were being distributed to the affected states.
“Government is also getting 826,000 units which are being shipped from Europe to us within the next few days.
“The most affected states have been Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina and together they have about 85 percent of the cases.
“As of today, there have been 2,996 cases in 16 states and 54 local governments.
“There have been 336 fatalities of which 141 have been confirmed by laboratory tests,’’ said the minister.
He announced that two treatment centres were being set up in every local government and lumber puncture kits had also been distributed so that doctors could take samples to a laboratory for testing.

‘Health is wealth’.
This is one of the earliest sayings that I remember as a child. It is however difficult to comprehend the full meaning and impact of those three words until you lose your health.
Now, if health is lost gradually and you have the financial means and are able to run around to find the best medical facility with the best expertise to support you, then that is one thing. Imagine however, that health is lost suddenly? What if (God forbid) one has an emergency health crisis?
First of all, what do I mean by an emergency?
‘An emergency is a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.’
In health, immediate usually means within one hour from the event to the operating table, or any other intervention needed.Help can be needed within 8 minutes.
Health emergencies include road traffic accidents, heart attacks, strokes, collapse or loss of consciousness from any cause, difficulty breathing like asthmatics (you get the picture).
Are our emergency health services equipped to provide the level of expertise required to increase chances of survival or are we going to keep winging it and hoping for the best?
Road traffic accidents are the third leading cause of deaths in Nigeria (depends on the data source) and we rank 191 out of 193 countries; I mean,if your child brought that kind of report card home, would you be laughing?
Unfortunately, data quality is still poor. Most likely you will find that this is the picture for cardiac arrests and strokes too. Just look at our health profile here
There are also emergencies that arise from erstwhile stable conditions which become progressive.
We see too many scenes with victims being carried to hospital in private vehicles. We see people thrown into the backs of buses and trucks. This is not normal. Our expectations have been so battered that we just accept less than we should have.
You may ask “how will the government pay for the norm?” What is more expensive is the loss of lives of people in their prime. This is penny wise, pound foolish.
We need some righteous indignation ginger us into action. We can start by imbibing excellence into the services we already have.
Lagos for all intents and purposes still appears to be the ‘trail blazer’; however anecdotal evidence regarding the efficiency and efficacy of emergency services is damning.T he good thing is, telephone numbers needed in an emergency are widely publicised click here.
Ambulances need to be staffed with qualified paramedics who can carry out initial investigations at the seen, offer life saving first aid help, stabilise the patient, move them safely and transfer quickly to a waiting hospital (where they are aware that an emergency is on its way). All public facilities should have an emergency station and kit.
The state of healthcare in our blessed country is embryonic at best, and we deserve better. We deserve to have a fully functional emergency health care system. People deserve to survive after life threatening incidents. Health is everyone’s business. Health is wealth.
God bless Nigeria.
If you have any experiences, good or bad with using emergency services in Nigeria that you would like to share, please leave comments.

I still do not understand the judgement given by the court in which they ordered NAFDAC to compel the Nigerian bottling Company to inscribe on every bottle of Fanta and Sprite that the products turn poisonous when consumed with vitamin C.
According to the findings by United Kingdom health authorities which were also corroborated by other agencies in European Union countries, the products contain excessive levels of
sunset yellow and benzoic acid, which are known to be carcinogenic (cancer causing).
sunset yellow and benzoic acid, which are known to be carcinogenic (cancer causing).
These products should be declared unfit for human consumption just like it was declared in the United Kingdom.
The Nigerian bottling Company should be mandated to cease production and review their standard for the production of these drinks.
Even NAFDAC believes Nigerians are unfit for international standard. This is very sad.
Why must we always settle for mediocrity in this country?
What are your views on this?
